My research investigates the performance of an Oceans and Fisheries Canada numerical ocean model relative to fine scale glider observations in a defined region. Investigating salt and heat budgets, mesoscale variability and Haida eddie events shown by the Coastal Ice Ocean Prediction System for the West Coast of Canada (CIOPS-W) model in comparison to glider observations along Line P (a transect of the coastal ocean near Vancouver Island to Ocean Station P) enables an enhanced understanding of potential model limitations and an improved understanding of various ocean processes. Observations and measurements have been collected along Line P since 1956. This historic dataset provides a longtime scale of observations, allowing for a general idea of regional climatology and variability over time. This work would allow for an improved understanding of the limitations of CIOPS-W, which could in turn impact policy making, emergency response, biogeochemistry, and knowledge of the state of the ocean.
